EXPOsing New Jersey to a gluten free world

That little shriek of excitement you heard was me hearing about a big celiac-friendly event coming to the Garden State next month.

The Gluten & Allergen Free Expo is scheduled to run Sept. 7-8 at the Meadowlands Expo Center. According to its organizers, it will feature more than 150 vendors offering free samples and/or products for sale, as well as classes and swag.

On both days, the expo opens at 9 a.m. to "early bird" ticket holders and at 10 a.m. to the general public, closing at 4 p.m. The cost of is $20-$35 a day for adults and $5-$10 for children, plus convenience fees. A two-day pass is discounted. Tickets can be purchased at gfaexpo.com. (Parents take note: Strollers are allowed in the expo on Sunday only!)

Presented by Udi's and Glutino brands, the event was started by blogger-turned-expo CEO Jen Cafferty, a nationally recognized expert. It is billed as the nation's "premier" GF  and allergen-free event, as well as the largest. In addition to New Jersey, organizers are bringing the affair to Chicago, Dallas and San Francisco in the coming months. A list of other food companies also are sponsoring the expo, and they will have representatives on hand to showcase their products.

Both days of the family-friendly event feature educational sessions led by presenters known to many in the celiac community, including cookbook authors Silvana Nardone and Annalise Roberts. The sessions address different aspects of GF baking, safely eating out, sugar intake and achieving goals after a celiac disease diagnosis, as well as other topics.

As its name indicates, the expo also highlights allergen free foods for those who have issues with nuts, dairy and other problematic ingredients.

The event similar to the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness' annual Appetite for Awareness, which I've attended multiple times, and seems just as promising for learning some things, meeting people and discovering new foods. I'm stoked about the whole thing.
