On the Road: South Carolina ... Part Three

We’re back from a summer vacation Down South. During our long road trip, we spotted a good number of Jersey license plates in each of our destinations. Along the way, we ate in a number of local restaurants and discovered some great gluten-free meals that were delicious, unique and convenient.

This is the last of a three-part post highlighting our favorite gluten-free finds, and its all about a Jersey favorite: Pizza!

My fellow travelers were in the mood for pizza, and didn't want to leave our hotel. Being from Jersey, we try to avoid pizza chains, since they typically don't deliver the quality which we've grown accustomed. So, we consulted the front desk for suggestions on "local" shops.

Intending to order a salad (the staple of every celiac when confronted with a lack of gluten-free options), I was happily surprised to notice a small line of type written below the list of pizza varieties offered by Famulari's Pizzeria. For a mere 99 cents more, I could order a gluten-free crust.

My salad meal plan was instantly downsized to a side order, as I decided on a plain cheese pizza. It only comes in a 10-inch size, but that was plenty. Unexpectedly, it was one of the best gluten-free pizzas I've ever tasted. In my excitement, amplified by hunger, I neglected to inquire about cross-contamination. However, I'm happy to report that I did not feel "glutened" at all.

Summerville also is home to Mellow Mushroom, a regional pizza chain that serve gluten-free pies. We did not try it, and have read mixed web reviews about it, mostly concerning taste and value. Some diners raved about it, while others seemed turned off by the quality you get for the cost. However, it seems to be a viable option in "foreign" area where few gluten-free meals were easily found.

Mellow Mushroom has other locations in Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Avondale. All gluten-free pizzas are 12-inches in diameter, but prices and ingredients vary by location. There is plenty of variety on the gluten-free menu in terms of toppings, as well as white pizza, beer and other drinks.

Who knew there would be such excellent gluten-free pizza options in South Carolina?!
