Gone Green

These cookies are fantastic!

That's the first, and most important, thing you need to know about the Green Pea Cookie.

Yes, they're bright green in color, which is either exciting or a turn-off, depending on how well you enjoy a culinary adventure. As the name suggests, they're made with, well, green peas. Veggies! And they taste nothing like those small, round good-for-the-body pieces that you may have hated as a child (and may still).

They taste much better and, of course, they're available gluten-free.

The cookies were created with a traditional recipe from Singapore, the native land of San Francisco-based company co-founders Fiona Lee and Tan Ying "Sean" Quan. American Larissa Russell rounds out the founding trio.

The gluten-free versions are made with roasted green peas, sugar, rice flour, organic sunflower oil and salt.

Following a recommendation, four members of the Gluten Free Garden State family recently sampled the cookies. They are powdery and melt in your mouth, and sweet without being overwhelmingly so. In addition to the regular Green Pea Cookie, the company offers a chocolate-covered version, which we did not try ... yet.

Three of us (all adults) loved them. The fourth (a young girl) did not, but I have a feeling the chocolate-covered version would have gone over much better with her.

The Green Pea Cookie company hasn't yet made its products available through commercial retailers, but are expected to roll them out soon. In the meantime, you can "buy" cookies through the company's Kickstarter campaign with a minimum donation of $10. (Be sure to request "gluten-free.") Find it here.
