The Alumni Grill is my new go-to place for quick, summer eats in Wildwood.
Located on Pacific Avenue, just a couple of blocks from Mariner's Landing on the boardwalk, the Alumni offers a decent gluten-free menu in a fun, school-themed atmosphere. For gluten-free foods, it relies on a dedicated fryer from April 1 to Sept. 28. (It has only limited hours during the off-season, during which the dedicated fryer is not used.)
The gluten-free menus consists of seven sandwiches ($8.95-$10.95), all served on an Udi's gluten-free bun. They include burgers, chicken, pulled pork and filet tips. It also offers two salad choices ($5.95-$7.25)and two types of fries ($3.95-$4.50).
On my visit, I ordered a take-out meal consisting of a chicken and sauteed garlic spinach sandwich with roasted
red peppers and provolone cheese; and sweet potato fries, on the
side. The meal was divine! The taste and texture were excellent, fresh and flavorful. And it looked so good that my dining companions, who had pizza from another establishment, were salivating over my gluten-free meal.
Later, I mentioned my experience to other friends. They, in turn, told me they had had multiple positive experiences, as well.
The Alumni Grill appears to take gluten-free diets seriously. I felt relatively safe going in and was not "glutened" in any way. However, the food is served with a cautionary notation that's worth considering.
On its menu, it says, "While we will do everything possible to produce gluten free menu items,
we have to rely on the honesty and integrity of several food
manufacturers. Alumni Grill will assume no responsibility for the use
of this menu and information which has not been verified by Alumni
Grill. Patrons are encouraged to their own satisfaction, to consider
this information in light of their individual requirements and needs."
Caveat Emptor!
