My Blue Heaven

By nature, Mexican food menus tend to offer an adequate variety of gluten-free foods. Quality dining establishments, for example, will always have corn tortillas as a safe, soft alternative to traditional flour tortillas. Meanwhile, beans, rice and various taco toppings are often gluten-free.

Some, however, make that extra effort.

Blue Moon Mexican Cafe falls under that category, and has delicious food to boot. Its five locations, including those in Bergen and Hudson counties, offer a menu of "Gluten 'safe' foods," which is a compilation of regular menu selections that were suggested by customers with gluten-related dietary issues. Options include a variety of salads and soups (all sans tortilla strips), as well as tacos, fajitas, stir fry and seafood entrees. On the side, Mexican rice and beans (black or refried) round out a meal.

I've eaten at Blue Moon on multiple occasions and have never felt "poisoned" by gluten. The attentive staff appears to take seriously the effect gluten has on some people. The servers I have encountered were knowledgeable about the issue, answering most questions themselves and otherwise going to the chef for information.

A recent visit to the Englewood restaurant yielded a filling brunch that that included chicken fajitas (corn tortillas), flan and a complementary glass of sangria, and was served at an outdoor table on the sidewalk. Other Blue Moon restaurants are located in Woodcliff Lake, Wyckoff, Jersey City and Bronxville, NY. It also offers catering and delivery to patrons in Bergen, Passaic and parts of Essex and Morris counties, as well as some nearby areas of New York City and New York State.
