Paradise with a gluten-free bun

Image/Cheeseburger in Paradise
Cheeseburger in Paradise, the small chain of burger joints owned by musician Jimmy Buffett, announced yesterday a new "gluten-friendly" menu. And, yes, it includes buns!

A word of caution: The restaurants, including its Secaucus location, are not certified as "gluten-free" by any of the organizations that do so. The menu states that the company is taking "careful precautions" to maintain the gluten-free nature of the ingredients it uses and that the chefs and managers strive to avoid exposure to potential "allergens," it does cannot guarantee there won't be cross-contamination and suggests customers use their own judgement in consuming products. If you're comfortable with that, read on ...

According to the chain, the new menu offers "boatloads" of options for gluten-free customers. Six burgers that are naturally gluten-free without the bun top the menu, but WITH safe buns. "Options include the Baja with fresh avocado, sour cream, shredded lettuce, jalapenos, onions, pepper jack cheese and salsa; the Cajun spiced Black and Bleu with bleu cheese, applewood smoked bacons, shredded lettuce, tomatoes and red onions; plus the Good Egg featuring bacon, American cheese, mayonnaise and a topper of an over-easy fried egg," the chain says.

There are non-burger gluten-free entrees too, such as the St. Bart's Citrus Chicken (two citrus-marinated grilled chicken breasts). Entrees are served with a choice of two sides with choices that include French Fried Potatoes and steamed broccoli.

In addition, there are appetizers, including Loaded Chips, Kickin' Chicken Nachos (with corn tortillas and grilled chicken) and an assortment of Dippers; three different salads with dressings and optional blackened shrimp or grilled salmon. Hand-dipped milkshakes are available for dessert. Cocktails, such as Strawberry Sangria and Coco Melon Mojito, round out the gluten-free menu.

Named after Buffett's most famous song, "Cheeseburger in Paradise," the bar & grill restaurant has eight locations in seven states. The locations include Secaucus, where it's situated in the Harmon Meadows Plaza.
