GFGS Community Calendar: September 2014

As a service to our regular readers and the Celiac community at large, Gluten Free Garden State offers an ongoing list of upcoming events of interest. We feature local happenings, regional events and national programs open to the public. The calendar appears on the second Sunday of each month. Links are posted to Facebook and Twitter using the hashtages #2ndSundaySked and #savetheceliacdate.

Fall is a great time for a road trip, and there's plenty to do within a couple hours of drive time. But first, cap off the summer with a baseball game or golf outing!

In the Garden State

Today: Gluten-Baking classes, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Sur La Table, Quakerbridge Mall in Lawrenceville and the Promenade at Sagemore in Marlton (Evesham). Instructed by Sara Cruz and Kristen Gehert, respectively, students will make fruit muffins with streusel topping, flourless peanut butter chocolate chip cookies, chocolate brownies, banana bread with coconut and flax. Saturday, Sept. 20: FARE Walk for Food Allergy, hosted by the Food Allergy Resource & Education (formerly FAAN) at Campbell's Field in Camden; An awareness and fund raising event, it starts 9 a.m. with check-in, followed by the walk at 10 a.m. in the home of the Camden RiverSharks. Sunday, Oct. 5: CSA (Celiac Sprue Association) Southern New Jersey Chapter #9 meeting, 2 p.m. at Hope Church, 700 Cooper Rd., Voorhees. New members welcome. Visit the group's website for more information.



Sunday, Oct. 12: FARE Walk for Food Allergy, hosted by the Food Allergy Resource & Education (formerly FAAN) at the BlueClaws' stadium in Lakewood; An awareness and fund raising event, it starts 9 a.m. with check-in, followed by the walk at 10 a.m. in the minor league baseball stadium. Saturday, Oct. 18: Gluten Free Festival at ShopRite of Marlton, 10 am-2 pm. Food samples and information from medical and support services. The store is located on Route 70 West in Evesham at the Route 73 junction. No cost to attend.

Sunday, Oct. 26: FARE Walk for Food Allergy, hosted by the Food Allergy Resource & Education (formerly FAAN) at Wild Duck Pond in Ridgewood; An awareness and fund raising event, it starts 9 a.m. with check-in, followed by the walk at 10 a.m. near the pond in Saddle River County Park. Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 27-28: Tri-State Food Expo at the Meadowlands Exposition Center. Catering to restaurant, retail and other food service industry professionals, it features some gluten-free vendors, as well as general demonstrations and information. Near the Garden State

Saturday, Sept. 20: Celiac Awareness Night at Yankee Stadium, Bronx, N.Y. Take in the New York Yankees vs. Toronto Blue Jays with expanded gluten-free options, including hot dogs and sausages on gluten-free buns. Tickets are $35 per seat in sections 232A-234 with a portion of sales donated to the National Celiac Disease Society. Purchase tickets through the Gluten Free Calendar.

Wednesday, Sept. 24: Celiac Disease Foundation's 2nd Annual Golf Outing, New Hempstead, N.Y. Fund raiser for the non-profit organization at the New York Country Club, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost is $25 to attend the cocktail hour only and $200 for individual golfers. Thursday, Oct. 9: Autumn Gluten Free! class with Charlotte Ann Albertson's Cooking School. In this one-night session, 6:30-9 p.m. at Madsen Kitchen & Bath Design Center (2901 Sprinfield Rd., Broomall, Pa.), corporate chef David Grear and dietician Judy Matusky are partnering for a nutrition/cooking class that offers tips for shopping and preparing gluten-free foods. Sunday, Nov. 9: The Central PA Gluten Free Expo, Noon-5 p.m., presented by Central PA Newspapers and the State College Celiac Support Group. This 2nd annual event is being held at the Penn Stater Conference Center, 215 Innovation Blvd. in State College, Pa. There are gluten-free vendors with samples, door prizes, goodie bags for the first 500 adults and educational presentations. Tickets are $5 in advance, $10 at the door. Children age 16 and under are free. There is no cost to park. Visit the event's website for ticket sales and additional information.


Road Trips

Wednesday-Saturday, Sept. 17-20: Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore, Md. Held at the Baltimore Convention Center with more than 1,200 exhibiting businesses, including some representing the gluten-free food industry. Event includes vendor fair, education, workshops, tours and entertainment. Go to expoeast.com for tickets and additional information.

Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 25-26: Gluten & Allergen Free Expo in Springfield, Mass. with educational presentations, and products for sampling and purchase. Event runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Go to gfafexpo.com to purchase tickets and obtain additional information.

Sunday, Nov. 9; Gluten Intolerance Group 40th Anniversary Celebration, 1-5 p.m. at the Greater Tacoma Convention & Trade Center in Washington State. The event features exhibitors, face painting, table games, bounce houses for all ages, a photo booth, and silent and live auctions. Admission is $5; free for members and children under age 12. Saturday, Nov. 22: Food Allergy & Celiac Convention at Walt Disney World's Coronado Springs Resort, Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Starting at 9 a.m., the day includes breakfast, an expo area, workshops, samples, information and giveaways. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door for adults; $5 for children. Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 28-March 1: Gluten Free Food Allergy Fest at the Austin Convention Center in Texas. Hosted by Gluten Free & More magazine (formerly Living Without), the event runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. It offers free samples of gluten-free, allergy-friendly foods, as well as informative presentations by experts in the gluten-free community. Admission is reasonably priced.
