- Accept that people will be giving out treats full of gluten. There’s nothing you can do about it. Just go with the flow, and don’t allow it to ruin your or your child’s fun. Trick-or-treating is a childhood tradition that doesn’t have to be avoided. Just be sure to weed out the “bad” stuff later. If it’s all wrapped by the manufacturer, there should be no issue.
- Allow your gluten-free child to swap treats that contain gluten for a non-candy treats or toys that you have purchased. Then, bring the “gluten” candy to the office, or donate it to a local food pantry or other non-profit organization. Let your child be a part of the donation process, and make it a positive experience.
- Hand out candy that’s gluten-free, such as lollipops, Smarties, Starburst or plain Hershey chocolate bars. That way, you or your child can enjoy the leftovers.
- Help other parents of children with gluten issues and food allergies by offering candies that are free of the most common allergens or small toys. Better yet, paint a pumpkin teal and put it by the door so parents familiar with the symbol will know your house has allergen-safe treats. A picture colored teal by your child also works.
- Don’t hesitate to ask about allergen-friendly options at houses showing a teal pumpkin. Homeowners put it there for a reason.
- Have your child choose gluten-free options whenever possible. Some people will present a bowl and instruct children to pick an item or two. Talk with your child beforehand, so he or she understands what are the good choices and which are not (ie. Kit-Kats or pretzels).

Treats without Getting Tricked
Halloween can be a gluten minefield for trick-or-treating children. While we can't eradicate this poison protein entirely (and really, that wouldn't be fair to others), we can deal with it. Here are some tips garnered from past experiences:
